If you have just searched for a Costco near you, the odds are you want two things: whether it is open right now, and how much time you have. Here is the short version, followed by what to verify before you leave the house.
Is it open right now?
On a weekday, if it is between 10:00 AM and 8:30 PM, almost certainly yes. Saturday the window is 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Sunday it is 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the shortest day of the week. Executive members can add an hour to the front of any of those.
The exceptions are the seven holidays when every warehouse in the country closes for the whole day, and the two eves when they close around 5:00 PM. If today is a holiday, check the closure list first.
Four things to check before you drive
- The department you actually need. The pharmacy closes at 7:00 PM on weekdays and does not open at all on Sunday. Optical closes early too. The warehouse being open does not mean your counter is.
- Whether that site has it. Not every warehouse has a gas station, a pharmacy, a tire center or a food court. The location page on costco.com lists the departments for each site.
- Your membership. The gas station will not authorize without a valid card, and an expired membership stops you at the door. Pharmacy and optical are the only exceptions.
- The time of day. Saturday afternoon and Sunday are the two busiest windows of the week. The first hour after opening is the calmest.
Finding the closest warehouse
Costco’s own warehouse locator on costco.com is the most reliable source, because it lists the current hours for each department at that exact site. The Costco app does the same thing and remembers your home warehouse. Google Maps is quicker but shows one combined set of hours, so it will not tell you that the pharmacy shut ninety minutes ago.
Do you need to be a member?
To shop, yes. There are three legitimate ways in without your own card: go with a member, who can bring two guests, use a Costco Shop Card that a member bought for you, or visit only the pharmacy or optical counter, which are open to the public by law. Beyond that, the entrance check is real and consistent.
